How Electrostatic Discharge from our body? And tips to avoid

Separation between our shoes and floor create electrostatic charges on our bodies then discharge to doorknob because of different electrostatic potentials.

We always create electrostatic charges onto our body, while we are walking, getting off car's seat, pushing the trolley in the supermarket and etc, then there is always discharge thru metal object near by you. The different electrostatic potentials cause the discharge thru very small air gap between your body to those objects.

Most of the time we can't feel static shock because it is not high enough to the level that we can feel. Human being can feel the electrostatic discharge (ESD) at about 2,000-3,000 Volts. It is depended on individual sensitivity.

ESD from our body can be a nuisance but are not generally health risk. Attention!!! It may cause fire and explosion risk if there is a spark near by flammable atmospheres.

There was a tip that I tried during wintertime to avoid static shock or reduce severe of shock. I took car’s key or coin touch the doorknob or metal object before you touching it by your hand.

It would damage those devices or made device malfunction. Even worst because you can't feel, hear, smell and see ESD, the level that damage your devices.

There are thousands of cases of ESD damage to sensitive product such as semiconductor, hard disk, electronics and etc. Some cases pays millions of dollars without notice. Loose their customer because reliability issue in the field. Product doesn’t work went out the door.

So we have to know and learn more about Basic Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), their cause of effect, prevention, control and finally solutions to fix ESD issue.
